A global IT services company needed to certify 2,500 engineers across AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, and CompTIA Security+ programmes within one financial year. The pressure was commercial: several key enterprise contracts required a minimum number of certified practitioners as a contractual deliverable.
The existing approach relied on external boot-camp vendors — expensive, time-intensive (5-day residential programmes), and yielding a first-attempt pass rate of only 63%. With 2,500 engineers needing certification across India, USA, Europe, and Australia, the cost and time implications of scaling this model were unsustainable.
The Head of Engineering Learning commissioned Creativ Technologies to design an internal certification preparation programme that could achieve higher pass rates, in less time, at a fraction of the cost — without pulling engineers completely offline.
Creativ Technologies conducted a 3-week diagnostic phase: analysing exam blueprints for all three certification tracks, reviewing performance data from the company's previous boot-camp cohorts, and interviewing both successful and unsuccessful certification candidates to identify the most common knowledge and application gaps.
The findings pointed clearly to a structural issue: candidates understood concepts but failed in applying them under exam conditions. The solution was not more theory — it was more practice. A competency-based learning architecture was designed where every module was mapped to a specific exam domain and built around "practice-first" pedagogy: learners encounter a simulated scenario or lab challenge before accessing the explanatory content.
54 technical microlearning modules were planned — each 8–14 minutes long, covering specific exam sub-domains. 18 interactive lab simulations were scoped, replicating real AWS Console, Azure Portal, and security monitoring environments inside Articulate Storyline with custom JavaScript interactions.
The programme was structured as three parallel certification tracks, each with a 16-week learning journey: 10 weeks of self-paced microlearning + lab simulations, 4 weeks of adaptive assessment and mock exam practice, and 2 weeks of final exam preparation. An adaptive engine was built into the LMS to identify each learner's weakest exam domains and serve additional practice content automatically.
The 18 lab simulations were built as fully interactive sandbox environments — learners can deploy virtual infrastructure, configure security groups, respond to simulated breach alerts, and troubleshoot misconfigurations in a safe environment with no risk of affecting production systems. xAPI tracked every interaction, decision, and time-on-task across all labs.
Results from the first certification cohort of 800 engineers showed a 91% first-attempt pass rate — up from 63% with the previous boot-camp model — and an average preparation time of 4 months versus the previous 8-month cycle. The programme has since been institutionalised as the standard certification preparation pathway company-wide.
"Our engineers are now better prepared for certification exams than they ever were after a 5-day boot-camp. The lab simulations are genuinely world-class — indistinguishable from working in a real AWS console. Creativ Technologies understood the technical depth required and delivered it without compromise."
